As I write this, there are 821 people watching Justin Kan.
I am also watching Justin.
None of us can actually see Justin. We can only see what Justin sees.
Why?
Because Justin has a television camera strapped to his head.
He has had the camera going for over 14 days now, broadcasting everything he sees, everything he does, live 24/7. You can watch it all on his web site, streaming through a video window on the home page. Just below the video window, live chat viewers are typing in an endless stream of text comments about what they are seeing.
10:42 miniz33: FASCINATING!
10:43 sheeplovem: sigh
10:43 miniz33: Boredom
10:44 sheeplovem: zzz
10:45 lakeport: I relate to justin..I too am an asian guy from san francisco who is single
Me and the other 821 people…wait it's up to 873 now…are watching a college party in someone's messy apartment. Plastic cups of beer, flimsy folding chairs, guys and girls nervously flirting…all the things we'd expect of a college party. That is until Justin looks down and adjusts a knob on what looks like a satellite uplink that Nasa would be using to communicate with the Space Shuttle.
10:46 xcal2k3: Aye, how does he change the battery
10:46 xcal2k3: and keep it on
10:47 miniz33: lol
10:47 miniz33: He plugs it in?
The 992 people and I watch as Justin speaks. "I'm going to put another camera on the other side," he tells them and everyone at the party laughs.
I wonder if his parents tune in to keep an eye on their son. Or if his old girlfriend is checking out who he is checking out at the party. His uncles, aunts, teachers, employers, mailman, and I with now 1,044 people watch as he asks what's there to eat.
Justin puts down his plastic cup and picks up a laptop. He pulls up his website and 1,167 people and I watch Justin watching Justin on his own home page. Below the continuous video stream, is an endless stream of chatter by the now 1,224 live viewers. Text comments roll by like clouds. Occasionally I look at them.
10:48 kashif: u sit here all day and watch some other guy live his life.
10:48 kashif: life is too short
Kashif is right, but I can't take my eyes off the video stream. Justin has gotten up to go to the kitchen and get something to eat. I watch as his arm goes forward to dig into the mash potatoes with a spoon. But from this POV, it's like it's my arm. Now Justin is cutting some meat and putting it on his plate. Our plate. He carries the plate back into the living room, where the now 1,433 live viewers and I watch as he brings forkfuls up just below the view of the camera. 1,506 of us enjoy Justin's meal together.
10:52 vercety: food!!!!!!!!!
10:53 miniz33: lol
Justin is thirsty, so he opens a beer and 1,619 of us watch him fill a red plastic cup. I wonder how much Budweiser might pay to have Justin drink their beer so that 1,726 of us will see the logo. The food looks pretty shabby. If Justin called the local Dominoes pizza on his cell and told them that 1,867 viewers are watching live - right now - and would they send over some pizza's, I'd bet they would do it for free.
There are 2,036 people at the party now, the 7 people I can see in the living room with Justin in real life and 2,029 here with me in the virtual party on live chat. Justin sits down next to a girl and strikes up a conversation. She asks him about the camera on his head and all the people that are likely watching them.
"Let me tell you something about fame," he tells her, "Don't let them see your big face…I think you put the camera on most people their not nice 24/7…Does your dad know you're here?" 2,186 of us are probably thinking he's striking out with her, and Justin seems to see that too. In the meantime, he's also striking out in the live chat.
10:54 surfgirl: *sigh*
10:54 initiate: ?
10:54 surfgirl: i want to go on a date with him.
10:54 singapore: cool
10:54 initiate: his producer is looking for dates..
10:54 singapore: wow
10:54 surfgirl: I know, but I'm in Florida.
10:54 surfgirl: =(
10:55 singapore: not that far
10:55 initiate: where's justin located?
10:55 lumberjack: California.
10:55 initiate: hahahaa
So Justin opens his laptop again and starts reading the latest fan letters that people have emailed in. The girl he is sitting with also takes out her laptop and starts typing. 2,395 of us watch the two of them type. The party continues on around them, but they are oblivious to it and to the 2,421 live chat viewers.
11:02 initiate: so can we chat to justin directly?
11:02 initiate: like.. right now?
11:02 singapore: why not
11:03 initiate: since he's on his laptop?
11:03 lumberjack: I highly doubt he will reply.
Justin and the girl watch themselves watching themselves on his home page. 2,628 of us watch them watching them, too. Just as I'm wondering why it's so hard to take my eyes off this stream of the totally commonplace, the live chat answers my question, as if reading my mind.
11:07 mat: GIVE ME MY FIFTEEN MINUTES OF FAME PLEASE
It's not a camera that Justin is wearing. It's a mirror. We see ourselves in this networked cybertech reflection. All 2,726 of us…wait, it's up to 2,873 now…
And, Action!
Justin.tv: Justin wears the camera 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You see what he sees everywere he goes.
